Web Site Documentation
With the help of
Diane Kovacs, the teacher of Web Design and Construction for Organizations, and my client Keydi Boss O’Hagan, the Medical Librarian of Holy Name Medical Center Libraries, I have done this job for redesigning the libraries’ website. This document states the goals of this redesign, a brief instruction to the new site from three aspects, and the experience I have got through the whole redesign process.
Goals
- Propose a new site based on .NET platform using C# (ASP.NET) to reorganize information/materials from the old site.
- Provide visitors with instant messaging including headings and news.
- Make updating the website dynamically available by using backstage management system.
- Give customers a Google search box to seek information in the domain of http://www.holynamelibrary.org
- Try to present a clean and multifunctional website looking good with less.
Instruction to the new website
Technology:
Programing:ASP.NET (C#) programing language has been employed in the new website based on .NET 4 Platform in order to provide a well design and functional system.
Database:MS SQL Server is the database used to connect ADO.NET. There are three tables Admin, Headlines, and Events stored in the database. Table Admin is for managing accounts information, Table Headlines and Table Event are for datagridview headlines and news in the home page, respectively.
Scripts:Software like Adobe Photoshop, External CSS files, JavaScript files have also been implemented to realize drop-down menus and the layout of text and pictures.
Layout:
Images:Adobe Photoshop has been used to design the new logo of the website and process images. The new logo contains a book open by three pages with three different colors: RGB.
Menus:JavaScript has been coded to implement the drop-down menu as the navigation bar.
Arrangements:Tables, .CSS Boxes/layers, and external stylesheets have been used to plan the layout, present different colorful boxes and place the content text including titles, subtitles, and back to top.
Functions:
Messaging:ASP.ENT DataGridView has been used to provide Headlines and News. Headlines and News have been decoded by two different colors, and both of them can be updated (add new, edit, delete) in the background management panel.
Searching:Google search plug-in has been employed in the index page in order to give customers opportunities to seek information in the website.
Basic Information:Basic information including about, hours, staff, and contact has been placed in the prominent position (in the left of the home page with interesting pictures) in order to make information obtaining much easier.
Management:Backstage management system has been realized in order to bring convenience to the information updating. Administrator can pass the Login panel using account username and password, then add, edit, or delete anything in the management panel.
Experiences
Communications:Keydi’s feedbacks and replies have given me a great help in the whole process. Diane’s courses have helped me a lot to construct a solid base for web design and construction. I have learned so much about CSS, JavaScript, and HTML. In addition, thanks to my classmates’ suggestions, I have found drawbacks and got many great ideas.
Skills:The courses in the classroom online have taught me a lot about basic web design knowledge, and this practical work really gave me an impressive experience in practice. It has improved my skills in web design and construction, and let me know how to plan and implement a well design site.
Thanks to all the people who helped me!
